Shoulder Treatment

Osteopathy

Osteopaths are practitioners of manual therapy, who have experience in examining, treating, diagnosing, managing, and preventing musculoskeletal disorders with physical treatment. In Australia to become an Osteopath, you require a university qualification.

An osteopath focuses on your whole body during a treatment. We believe that the structure of your body influences its function, and vice versa. Therefore, if there was a dysfunction to one area of your body, it can affect other regions of the body.

There are many similarities between Osteopathy, Physiotherapy and Chiropractors – all can treat the same conditions and some techniques can be interchanged between professions. The main differences are found in the foundations and philosophies behind each modality and how the principles of treatment are applied.

Osteopathic principles include:

1. The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.

2. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.

3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.

4. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.

Therefore, osteopaths work on the basis that our body works as a functional and dynamic unit. This is the foundation for our approach and hands on treatment to treat holistically and globally, to make a positive change to your body as a whole, not just the isolated, painful area. This is to assist the self-healing and regulatory mechanism each of us possess, so the body can in turn heal itself.

Osteopaths treat people in all stages of life. Babies, children and pregnancy related complaints all the way through to the elderly. We treat elite athletes and weekend warriors, desk bound worker and the next-door handy man, and everything in between.

Osteopaths treat pain that may come on occasionally or due to a particular acute injury, such as a sporting injury. We also treat conditions that may have been giving you grief for a lot longer, or chronic pain. Each treatment you receive will be tailored specifically to you and what your body needs.

We use many different techniques that will suit your complaint and your body. Although your treatment will be specific for you, we will incorporate the same principles to improve your overall health, function and ensure you understand your complaint.

Some Osteopathic Techniques

Our osteopaths will listen to your complaint, then we will assess and diagnose your problem. Once we have our plan to help you, we will administer a treatment that will aim to restore function and minimize your pain.

Our osteopaths have a wide range of techniques that will help you with your specific needs. Some of these techniques include:

  • Massage

  • Muscle Energy Technique

  • Articulation

  • High velocity Low amplitude (HVLA)

  • Dry Needles

  • Cupping

  • Visceral

  • Indirect

  • Taping

Treatments will use a variety of techniques, yet not all will be included in one particular session. Your practitioner will determine the appropriate methods to utilise your treatment time to get the best outcome.
